Part of my degree meant taking several textile science courses, throughout my degree I took four of these. I have learnt how to identify fibres, weave/knit structures, twist patterns, dyeing fabrics, quality assurance of textiles (tensile strength, colour fastness, abrasion resistance, etc.) and protective clothing research.
I wasn't sure how I would feel about these courses when I first began them, but I soon learnt once I began in HECOL 270 with Dr. Jane Batcheller that I really fell in love with textile sciences. Her way of teaching was very positive and she would always guide you to the correct answer. I also really enjoy the extra information I know about fabrics and the way clothing is made now so I can make more educated decisions on purchases I make. As well, I am able to find correct fabrics for projects I'm sewing to be as accurate as possible.
I believe that these tools I've acquired from my textile science classes will aid me in my career through the career paths of sewing, museums and textile conservation.
Here I will include artefacts from the following classes:
HECOL 270
HECOL 370
HECOL 470

HECOL 270
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Advancement of textile concepts introduced in HECOL 170 with an emphasis on textile finishing, colouration, care and maintenance. Techniques for fibre identification and yarn and fabric structural analysis are covered.
REFLECTION
Here I have included two pages from a lab that we completed near the end of the course. I remember really enjoying this as we learnt about the processes of dyeing, different ways to affect dye baths, and chronicling their results. We also did crocking, as heat transfer in order to analyze how dyes transferred onto different surfaces. I thought this was really interesting because it could be useful to my own projects, and it has helped me after this class immensely. In this course we also created a fabric swatch book that contains over 100 different fabric samples and fibres to aid us, and it is something I use as a resource very often!
HECOL 370
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Exploration of quality assurance of textiles and apparel through materials testing. Performance of Textiles relative to production standards and specifications.
REFLECTION
Once again this course was taught by Dr. Jane Batcheller and I really enjoyed it. This course had us playing with a lot of the different tools that the textile science labs have for testing. Here we learnt more about tensile strength, abrasion resistance, colour resistance, and more. We had a large paper due at the end of the term on the subject of standards for a button up shirt and I was very thankful to have great lab partners that I had both in HECOL 270 & 370. I have included my grade mark for my paper as well as my overall lab mark, and have attached the pdf of this paper. Keep in mind since this is a pdf of my paper it does not include photos of the fabric samples of the shirt that was studied. This course was the last one that I had taught by Jane, and I really appreciated a conversation that we had. I am someone that does not necessarily test well, and she noticed that and really encouraged me to keep working hard because my lab marks were good and that I knew more than I showed in my exams, which is true. It really helped me realize that although my marks don't always show it, I still deserve to be in this program and I know just as much as my classmates do.
HECOL 470
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Exploration of quality assurance of textiles and apparel through materials testing. Performance of textiles relative to product standards and specifications.
REFLECTION
This was my last textile science course that I got to take during my degree. I had wanted to take HECOL 476 that was to do with conserving textiles, something that I am very interested in but it did not fit in with my other classes that were necessary credits. This course did get cut a bit short due to our school moving online in March 2020, but I still feel like I learnt a lot through this course and enjoyed my time in it. I really enjoyed the one field trip we took to see a fire resistance testing facility. We did two larger projects in this course that I will attach here. I personally really enjoyed my final project on swimwear and rash-guard fabric as it pertains to my employment as a lifeguard, something I've been doing since high school. I also took my findings to my place of work after so that they were able to find more adequate rash-guards for our uniforms.
